अकबर बीरबल की पहली मुलाकात
अकबर को शिकार का बहुत शौक था। वे किसी भी तरह शिकार के लिए समय निकल ही लेते थे। बाद में वे अपने समय के बहुत ही अच्छे घुड़सवार और शिकरी भी कहलाये। एक बार राजा अकबर शिकार के लिए निकले, घोडे पर सरपट दौड़ते हुए उन्हें पता ही नहीं चला और केवल कुछ सिपाहियों को छोड़ कर बाकी सेना पीछे रह गई। शाम घिर आई थी, सभी भूखे और प्यासे थे, और समझ गए थे की वो रास्ता भटक गए हैं. राजा को समझ नहीं आ रहा था की वह किस तरफ़ जाए।
कुछ दूर जाने पर उन्हें एक तिराहा नज़र आया। राजा बहुत खुश हुए चलो अब तो किसी तरह वे अपनी राजधानी पहुँच ही जायेंगे। लेकिन जाएं तो जायें किस तरफ़. राजा उलझन में थे। वे सभी सोच में थे किंतु कोई युक्ति नहीं सूझ रही थी। तभी उन्होंने देखा कि एक लड़का उन्हें सड़क के किनारे खड़ा-खडा घूर रहा है। सैनिकों ने यह देखा तो उसे पकड़ कर राजा के सामने पेश किया. राजा ने कड़कती आवाज़ में पूछा, "ऐ लड़के, आगरा के लिए कौन सी सड़क जाती है"? लड़का मुस्कुराया और कहा, "जनाब, ये सड़क चल नहीं सकती तो ये आगरा कैसे जायेगी". महाराज जाना तो आपको ही पड़ेगा और यह कहकर वह खिलखिलाकर हंस पड़ा।
सभी सैनिक मौन खड़े थे, वे राजा के गुस्से से वाकिफ थे। लड़का फ़िर बोला," जनाब, लोग चलते हैं, रास्ते नहीं". यह सुनकर इस बार राजा मुस्कुराया और कहा," नहीं, तुम ठीक कह रहे हो. तुम्हारा नाम क्या है, अकबर ने पूछा। मेरा नाम महेश दास है महाराज, लड़के ने उत्तर दिया, और आप कौन हैं? अकबर ने अपनी अंगूठी निकाल कर महेश दास को देते हुए कहा, "तुम महाराजा अकबर – हिंदुस्तान के सम्राट से बात कर रहे हो". मुझे निडर लोग पसंद हैं. तुम मेरे दरबार में आना और मुझे ये अंगूठी दिखाना। ये अंगूठी देख कर मैं तुम्हें पहचान लूंगा।अब तुम मुझे बताओ कि मैं किस रास्ते पर चलूँ ताकि मैं आगरा पहुँच जाऊं।
महेश दास ने सिर झुका कर आगरा का रास्ता बताया और जाते हुए हिंदुस्तान के सम्राट को देखता रहा।
और इस तरह अकबर भविष्य के बीरबल से मिला।

बीरबल ने चोर को पकड़ा
एक बार राजा अकबर के प्रदेश में चोरी हई। इस चोरी में एक चोर नें एक व्यापारी के घर से बहुत ही कीमती सामान चुरा लिया था। उस व्यापारी को इस बात पर तो पूरा विश्वास था कि चोर उसी के 10 नौकरों में से कोई एक था पर वह यह नहीं जानता था की वह कौन है।
यह जानने के लिए की चोर कौन है! वह व्यापारी बीरबल के पास गया और उसने बीरबल से मदद मांगी। बीरबल नें भी इस बात पर हाँ कर दिया और अपने सिपाहियों से कहा कि सभी 10 नौकरों को कारागार/जेल में डाल दिया जाये। यह सुनते ही उसी दिन सिपाहियों द्वारा सभी नौकरों को पकड़ लिया गया। बीरबल नें सबसे पुछा कि चोरी किसने किया है परन्तु किसी नें भी यह मानने को इंकार कर दिया की चोरी उसने किया है।
बीरबल नें थोड़ी देर सोचा, और कुछ देर बाद वह दस समान लम्बाई की छड़ी ले कर आये और सभी चुने हुए लोगों को एक-एक छड़ी पकड़ा दिया। पर छड़ी पकडाते हुए बीरबल नें एक बात कहा! उस इंसान की छड़ी 2 इंच बड़ी हो जाएगी। जिस व्यक्ति नें यह चोरी की है। यह कह कर बीरबल चले गए और अपने सिपाहियों को निर्देश दिया की सुबह तक उनमें से किसी भी व्यक्ति को छोड़ा ना जाये।
जब बीरबल नें सुबह सभी नौकरों की छड़ी को ध्यान से देखा तो पता चला उनमें से एक नौकर की छड़ी 2 इंच छोटी थी। यह देखते ही बीरबल ने कहा! यही है चोर।
बाद में यह देख-कर उस व्यापारी नें बीरबल से प्रश्न किया कि कैसे उन्हें पता चला की चोर वही है। बीरबल नें कहा कि चोर नें अपने छड़ी के 2 इंच बड़े हो जाने के डर से रात के समय ही अपनी छड़ी को 2 इंच छोटा कर दिया था।

बख्तर की परीक्षा
एक बार अकबर बादशाह ने एक कारीगर को बख्तर बंद लोहे का वस्त्र, जिसे फौजी युद्ध के अवसर पर धारण करते हैं बनाने का आदेश दिया। राजा के आदेशनुसार कुछ दिन के बाद कारीगर ने बख्तर बंद तैयार करके बादशाह के सामने हाजिर कर दिया।
इसे बनाने में कारीगर ने कोई कसर बाकी नहीं रखी थी। अकबर बादशाह को वह लोहे का वस्त्र बहुत पंसद आया, लेकिन दूसरे ही क्षण उन्हें उसकी मजबूती पर शक होने लगा। उन्होेन वह वस्त्र एक टाट के पुतले को पहनाने की आज्ञा दी और तलवार लेकर स्वयं उसकी मजबूती की परीक्षा के लिए आगे बडे। जैसे ही अकबर ने उस बखतर बंद पर वार किया वह एक वार में ही फट गया।
यह देख बादशाह क्रोधित हो उठे और बोले इतना कमजोर बख्तर….. अरे मूर्ख इसे हम बिना परखे किसी युद्ध में ले जाते तो इससे क्या बचाव होता ? जाओं दूसरा मजबूत बख्तर बनाकर लाओं मगर याद रहे वह भी इसकी तरह कमजोर हुआ तो तुम्हारी गरदन उडा दी जायेगीं।
अकबर बादशाह का क्रोध पूर्ण हुक्म सुनकर कारीगर भयभीत हो गया लेकिन वह करता भी क्या, वह अकबर बादशाह को अदब से सलाम करके अपने घर वापस लौट आया। उसका उतरा चेहरा देखकर उसकी पत्नी ने कारण पूछा,
तब कारीगर ने अकबर बादशाह की आज्ञा की बात बताते हुए कहा अब मेरी जान बचनी कठिन है। उसकी पत्नी बहुत चतुर थी, कहने लगी क्यो जरा सी बात पर भयभीत होते हो, बीरबल के पास जाकर बचने का कोई उपाय क्यों नही पूछते ? पत्नी की बात से प्रोत्साहित होकर कारीगर बीरबल के पास गया और सारी बातें बताकर प्राणदान की प्रार्थना की।
बीरबल ने उसे ढांढस बनाते हुए कहा तुम अकबर बादशाह के यहाँ वह लोहे का बख्तर बनाकर ले जाना जब अकबर बादशाह काठ के पुतले को बख्तर पहनाने की आज्ञा दे तो उनसे कहना इसकी परीक्षा काठ के पुतले पर नहीं हो सकती मैं स्वयं इसको धारण कर लेता हूं, तब अकबर बादशाह अवश्य तुम्हारी प्रार्थना स्वीकार कर लेंगे किन्तु ध्यान रखना जैसे ही बख्तर पर तलवार चलाने के लिए वे या कोई और झपटे वैसे ही तुम एकाएक चिल्लाकर बडी भंयकर स्थिति उत्पन्न कर देना।
ताकि उसका हाथ कांप जायें और वह व्याकुल होकर दूर खडा हो जाए, यदि उपयुक्त कार्य भली भांति कर सके तो निष्चित ही तुमहारे प्राण बच जायेंगे। अकबर बादशाह के पूछने पर कारण यह बताना कि मेरे इस बख्तर को पहनने वाला काठ का पुतला तो होगा नहीं कुछ न कुछ शक्ति तो अवष्य रखता होगा फिर वह अपने प्रतिद्वंदी को अपने आस-पास ही क्यो फटकने देगा?
और यदि कोई दुश्मन पास आ भी जाये तो बख्तरबंद पहनने वाले की शकी का कुछ न कुछ खौफ तो होगा ही और वह इस तरह आसानी से बख्तर तोड नही पायेगा। बीरबल की बताई हुई युक्ति कारीगर को समझ में आ गई। दो-तीन दिन बाद लोहे का दूसरा बख्तर बनाकर वह अकबर बादशाह के दरबार में गया। अकबर बादशाह ने बख्तर पुनः काठ के पुतले को पहनाने की आज्ञा दी।
कारीगर ने बीरबल की बताई बात को देाहराकर अकबर से प्रार्थना की कि उसी के शारीर पर बख्तर की परीक्षा हो अकबर बादशाह ने उसकी प्रार्थना स्वीकार कर ली और एक चतुर सिपाही को होशियारी से तलवार चलाकर बख्तर की परीक्षा लेने की आज्ञा दी। सिपाही ने जैसे ही तलवार चलाने को उठाई वैसे ही बडे जोर से कडक कर कारीगर सिपाही की तरफ लपका सिपाही की तलवार उठी की उठी रह गई और वह भयभीत होकर दूर जाकर खडा हुआ।
अकबर बादशाह ने कारीगर से ऐसा करने का कारण पूछा कारीगर ने बीरबल के सिखाये अनुसार अकबर को जवाब दे दिया। अकबर बादशाह यह सुनकर बोले, कारीगर तुम्हारी बात तो ठीक हैं परन्तु सच सच बताओं तुम्हें यह सलाह किसने दी ? करीगर ने सच्ची बात भरे दरबार मे कह दी। बीरबल की चतुराई से अकबर बादशाह ओर सभी दरबारी अत्यधिक प्रसन्न हुए।

प्रश्न के बदले प्रश्न
एक दिन अकबर ने बीरबल से पूछा, "बीरबल, क्या तुम बता सकते हो कि मेरी पत्नी के हाथों में कितनी चुडीयाँ हैं"? बीरबल ने कहा, "हुज़ूर, माफ किजीये मुझे नहीं मालूम". क्यों, तुम तो रोज़ ही मेरी पत्नी के हाथों को देखते हो तुम्हें पता होना चाहिये, अकबर ने गुस्से से कहा।
बीरबल ने कहा, "महाराज चलिये जरा बाग की तरफ चलते हैं". वहाँ मैं आपको बताउँगा कि इस प्रश्न का उत्तर मुझे क्यों नहीं पता. और दोनो बाग की तरफ चल दिये। चलते-चलते वे बाग कि सीढीयों की तरफ बढे. अचानक बीरबल ने कहा, "महारज, आप दिन में कई बार इन सीढीयों से चढ़ते उतरते हैं, क्या आप बता सकते हैं कि ये कितनी सीढियाँ हैं"।
सुनकर अकबर केवल मुसकुराये और विषय बदल दिया.

बीरबल और लालची दुकानदार
एक बार बीरबल को शहर के लोगों ने आकर एक लालची बर्तनों के दूकानदार के बारे में शिकायत की कि वह बहुत लालची है। उसे सबक सिखाओ। यह सुनकर बीरबल दुकानदार के पास गए और वहां से तीन बड़े-बड़े पतीले खरीद लाए। कुछ दिन के बाद वह एक बहुत छोटी-सी पतीली लेकर लालची दुकानदार के पास पहुंचे और बोले,
"यह आपके बड़े पतीले ने बच्चा दिया, कृपया इसे रख लें।" दूकानदार बहुत खुश हुआ और ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी छोटी पतीली ले ली। कुछ दिन के बाद बीरबल एक बड़ा पतीला लेकर दूकानदार के पास गए और बोले, "मुझे यह पतीली पसंद नहीं आई, आप मेरे पैसे मुझे वापस कर दीजिये।" दुकानदार बोला, "लेकिन यह तो सिर्फ एक ही है, जबकि मैंने तुम्हें तीन पतीले दिए थे।"
बीरबल ने कहा, "जी, असल में दो पतिलों कि मृत्यु हो गई है " दुकानदार ने जवाब दिया, "जाओ-जाओ क्यों बेवक़ूफ़ बनाते हो ? क्या पतिलों कि मृत्यु होती हैं ?" बीरबल ने जवाब दिया, " क्यों नहीं, जब पतिलों के बच्चे पैदा हो सकते हैं, तो मृत्यु भी हो सकती है।"
दुकानदार को बीरबल के पैसे वापस करने पड़े। और दुकानदार को "सेर का सवा सैर" भी मिल गया। बीरबल कि होशियारी का कोई जवाब नहीं।

मूर्खों की सूची
बादशाह अकबर घुड़सवारी के इतने शौकीन थे कि पसंद आने पर घोड़े का मुंहमांगा दाम देने को तैयार रहते थे। दूर-दराज के मुल्कों, जैसे अरब, पर्शिया आदि से घोड़ों के विक्रेता मजबूत व आकर्षक घोड़े लेकर दरबार में आया करते थे। बादशाह अपने व्यक्तिगत इस्तेमाल के लिए चुने गए घोड़े की अच्छी कीमत दिया करते थे। जो घोड़े बादशाह की रुचि के नहीं होते थे उन्हें सेना के लिए खरीद लिया जाता था।
अकबर के दरबार में घोड़े के विक्रेताओं का अच्छा व्यापार होता था।
एक दिन घोड़ों का एक नया विक्रेता दरबार में आया। अन्य व्यापारी भी उसे नहीं जानते थे। उसने दो बेहद आकर्षक घोड़े बादशाह को बेचे और कहा कि वह ठीक ऐसे ही सौ घोड़े और लाकर दे सकता है, बशर्ते उसे आधी कीमत पेशगी दे दी जाए।
बादशाह को चूंकि घोड़े बहुत पसंद आए थे, सो वैसे ही सौ और घोड़े लेने का तुरंत मन बना लिया।
बादशाह ने अपने खजांची को बुलाकर व्यापारी को आधी रकम अदा करने को कहा। खजांची उस व्यापारी को लेकर खजाने की ओर चल दिया। लेकिन किसी को भी यह उचित नहीं लगा कि बादशाह ने एक अनजान व्यापारी को इतनी बड़ी रकम बतौर पेशगी दे दी। लेकिन विरोध जताने की हिम्मत किसी के पास न थी।
सभी चाहते थे कि बीरबल यह मामला उठाए।
बीरबल भी इस सौदे से खुश न था। वह बोला, "हुजूर! कल मुझे आपने शहर भर के मूर्खों की सूची बनाने को कहा था। मुझे खेद है कि उस सूची में आपका नाम सबसे ऊपर है।"
बादशाह अकबर का चेहरा मारे गुस्से के सुर्ख हो गया। उन्हें लगा कि बीरबल ने भरे दरबार में विदेशी मेहमानों के सामने उनका अपमान किया है।
गुस्से से भरे बादशाह चिल्लाए, "तुम्हारी हिम्मत कैसे हुई हमें मूर्ख बताने की ?"
"क्षमा करें बादशाह सलामत।" बीरबल अपना सिर झुकाते हुए सम्मानित लहजे में बोला आप चाहें तो मेरा सर कलम करवा दें, यदि आप के कहने पर तैयार की गई मूर्खों की फेहरिस्त में आपका नाम सबसे ऊपर रखना आपको गलत लगे।"
दरबार में ऐसा सन्नाटा छा गया कि सुई गिरे तो आवाज सुनाई दे जाए।
अब बादशाह अकबर अपना सीधा हाथ उठाए, तर्जनी को बीरबल की ओर ताने आगे बढ़े। दरबार में मौजूद सभी लोगों की सांस जैसे थम सी गई थी। उत्सुक्ता व उत्तेजना सभी के चेहरों पर नृत्य कर रही थी। उन्हें लगा कि बादशाह सलामत बीरबल का सिर धड़ से अलग कर देंगे। इससे पहले किसी की इतनी हिम्मत न हुई थी कि बादशाह को मूर्ख कहे।
लेकिन बादशाह ने अपना हाथ बीरबल के कंधे पर रख दिया। वह कारण जानना चाहते थे।
बीरबल समझ गया कि बादशाह क्या चाहते हैं। वह बोला, "आपने घोड़ों के ऐसे व्यापारी को बिना सोचे-समझे एक मोटी रकम पेशगी दे दी, जिसका अता-पता भी कोई नहीं जानता। वह आपको धोखा भी दे सकता है। इसलिए मूर्खों की सूची में आपका नाम सबसे ऊपर है। हो सकता है कि अब वह व्यापारी वापस ही न लौटे। वह किसी अन्य देश में जाकर बस जाएगा और आपको ढूढ़े नहीं मिलेगा।
किसी से कोई भी सौदा करने के पूर्व उसके बारे में जानकारी तो होनी ही चाहिए। उस व्यापारी ने आपको मात्र दो घोड़े बेचे और आप इतने मोहित हो गए कि मोटी रकम बिना उसको जाने-पहचाने ही दे दी। यही कारण है बस।"
"तुरंत खजाने में जाओ और रकम की अदायगी रुकवा दो।" अकबर ने तुरंत अपने एक सेवक को दौड़ाया।
बीरबल बोला, "अब आपका नाम उस सूची में नहीं रहेगा।"
बादशाह अकबर कुछ क्षण तो बीरबल को घूरते रहे, फिर अपनी दृष्टि दरबारियों पर केन्द्रित कर ठहाका लगाकर हंस पड़े। सभी लोगों ने राहत की सांस ली कि बादशाह को अपनी गलती का अहसास हो गया था। हंसी में दरबारियों ने भी साथ दिया और बीरबल की चतुराई की एक स्वर से प्रशंसा की।

कवि और धनवान आदमी
एक दिन एक कवि किसी धनी आदमी से मिलने गया और उसे कई सुंदर कविताएं इस उम्मीद के साथ सुनाईं कि शायद वह धनवान खुश होकर कुछ ईनाम जरूर देगा। लेकिन वह धनवान भी महाकंजूस था, बोला, "तुम्हारी कविताएं सुनकर दिल खुश हो गया। तुम कल फिर आना, मैं तुम्हें खुश कर दूंगा।"
"कल शायद अच्छा ईनाम मिलेगा।" ऐसी कल्पना करता हुआ वह कवि घर पहुंचा और सो गया। अगले दिन वह फिर उस धनवान की हवेली में जा पहुंचा। धनवान बोला, "सुनो कवि महाशय, जैसे तुमने मुझे अपनी कविताएं सुनाकर खुश किया था, उसी तरह मैं भी तुमको बुलाकर खुश हूं। तुमने मुझे कल कुछ भी नहीं दिया, इसलिए मैं भी कुछ नहीं दे रहा, हिसाब बराबर हो गया।"
कवि बेहद निराश हो गया। उसने अपनी आप बीती एक मित्र को कह सुनाई और उस मित्र ने बीरबल को बता दिया। सुनकर बीरबल बोला, "अब जैसा मैं कहता हूं, वैसा करो। तुम उस धनवान से मित्रता करके उसे खाने पर अपने घर बुलाओ। हां, अपने कवि मित्र को भी बुलाना मत भूलना। मैं तो खैर वहां मैंजूद रहूंगा ही।"
कुछ दिनों बाद बीरबल की योजनानुसार कवि के मित्र के घर दोपहर को भोज का कार्यक्रम तय हो गया। नियत समय पर वह धनवान भी आ पहुंचा। उस समय बीरबल, कवि और कुछ अन्य मित्र बातचीत में मशगूल थे। समय गुजरता जा रहा था लेकिन खाने-पीने का कहीं कोई नामोनिशान न था। वे लोग पहले की तरह बातचीत में व्यस्त थे। धनवान की बेचैनी बढ़ती जा रही थी, जब उससे रहा न गया तो बोल ही पड़ा, "भोजन का समय तो कब का हो चुका ? क्या हम यहां खाने पर नहीं आए हैं ?"
"खाना, कैसा खाना ?" बीरबल ने पूछा।
धनवान को अब गुस्सा आ गया, "क्या मतलब है तुम्हारा ? क्या तुमने मुझे यहां खाने पर नहीं बुलाया है ?"
"खाने का कोई निमंत्रण नहीं था। यह तो आपको खुश करने के लिए खाने पर आने को कहा गया था।" जवाब बीरबल ने दिया। धनवान का पारा सातवें आसमान पर चढ़ गया, क्रोधित स्वर में बोला, "यह सब क्या है? इस तरह किसी इज्जतदार आदमी को बेइज्जत करना ठीक है क्या ? तुमने मुझसे धोखा किया है।"
अब बीरबल हंसता हुआ बोला, "यदि मैं कहूं कि इसमें कुछ भी गलत नहीं तो…। तुमने इस कवि से यही कहकर धोखा किया था ना कि कल आना, सो मैंने भी कुछ ऐसा ही किया। तुम जैसे लोगों के साथ ऐसा ही व्यवहार होना चाहिए।"
धनवान को अब अपनी गलती का आभास हुआ और उसने कवि को अच्छा ईनाम देकर वहां से विदा ली।
वहां मौजूद सभी बीरबल को प्रशंसाभरी नजरों से देखने लगे

बीरबल तीन प्रश्न का उतर दो
बीरबल, राजा अकबर के बहुत प्रिय थे। वह अपने बहुत सारे निर्णय बीरबल की चालाकी और बुद्धिमानी के बल पर सभा में लेते थे। यह देख कर कुछ दरबारीयों के मन में बीरबल के प्रति घृणा जागृत हो गयी। उन दरबारियों नें मिल कर बीरबल को बादशाह अकबर के सामने निचा दिखने के लिए एक योजना बनाया।
एक दिन भरी सभा में उन दरबारियों नें अकबर के समक्ष कहा कि अगर बीरबल हमारे 3 प्रश्नों का उत्तर दे देंगे तो हम मान जायेंगे की बीरबल से बुद्धिमान कोई नहीं। बीरबल की बुद्धि की परीक्षा लेने के लिए बादशाह अकबर हमेशा तईयार खड़े रहते थे। यह बात सुनते ही राजा अकबर नें हाँ कर दिया।
3 प्रश्न कुछ इस प्रकार के थे –
प्रश्न 1: असमान में कितने तारे हैं?
प्रश्न 2: इस धरती का केंद्र कहाँ है?
प्रश्न 3: इस पृथ्वी में कितने पुरुष और महिला हैं?
यह सुनते ही अकबर ने तुरंत बीरबल से कहा! अगर तुम इन प्रश्नों के उत्तर नहीं दे पाओगे तो तुम्हे अपने मुख्यमंत्री के पद को त्यागना पड़ेगा।
पहले प्रश्न के उत्तर के लिए, बीरबल एक घने बालों वाले भेड़ को कर आये और कहने लगे की जितने बाल इस भेड़ के शरीर में हैं उतने ही तारे आसमान में हैं। अगर मेरे दरबारी मित्र इस भेड़ के सभी बाल गिनना चाहें तो गिन सकते हैं।
दुसरे प्रश्न के उत्तर के लिए, बीरबल जमीन पर कुछ रेखाएं खीचने लगे और कुछ देर बाद उन्होंने एक लोहे की छड़ी को गाड़ दिया और कहा यह है धरती का केंद्र बिंदु। अगर मेरे दरबारी दोस्त मापना चाहते हैं तो स्वयं माप सकते हैं।
तीसरे सवाल के उत्तर में बीरबल बोले, वैसे तो यह बताना बहुत ही मुश्किल है कि इस दुनिया में पुरुष कितने हैं और महिलाएं कितनी हैं क्योंकि इस दुनिया में कुछ ऐसे लोग भी हैं जिनको उस गणना में नहीं जोड़ा जा सकता जैसे की हमारे यह दरबारी मित्र। अगर इस प्रकार के लोगों को हम मार डालें तो हमें गणना करने में भी आसानी होगी।
यह सुनते ही सभी दरबारियों नें सर निचे कर लिया और कहा! बीरबल, तुमसे चालक और बुद्धिमान कोई नहीं

बीरबल का जन्म
जब महेश दास जवान हुआ तो वह अपना भाग्य आजमाने राजा बीरबल के पास गया। उसके पास राजा द्वारा दी गई अंगूठी भी थी जो उसने कुछ समय पहले राजा से प्राप्त की थी। वह अपनी माँ का आशीर्वाद लेकर भारत की नई राजधानी – फतैपुर सीकरी की तरफ़ चल दिया।
भारत की नई राजधानी को देख कर महेश दास हतप्रभ था. वह भीड़-भाड़ से बचते हुए लाल दीवारों वाले महल की तरफ़ चल दिया. महल का द्वार बहुत बड़ा और कीमती पत्थरों से सजा हुआ था, ऐसा दरवाजा महेश दास ने कभी सपनों में भी नहीं देखा था. उसने जैसे ही महल में प्रवेश करना चाहा तभी रौबदार मूछों वाले दरबान ने अपना भाला हवा में लहराया।
"तुम्हें क्या लगता है, कि तुम कहाँ प्रवेश कर रहे हो"? पहरेदार ने कड़कती आवाज़ में पूछा. महाशय, मैं महाराज से मिलने आया हूँ, नम्रता से महेश ने उत्तर दिया. " अच्छा! तो महाराज तुम्हारी प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं, कि तुम कब आओगे"? दरबान ने हँसते हुए पूछा. महेश मुस्कुराया और बोला, " बिल्कुल महाशय, और देखो मैं आ गया हूँ". और हाँ, " तुम बेशक बहुत बहादुर और वीर होंगे किंतु तुम मुझे महल में जाने से रोक कर अपनी जान को खतरे में डाल रहे हो"।सुनकर दरबान सहम गया पर फ़िर भी हिम्मत कर के बोला, "तुम ऐसा क्यों कहा रहे हो"? तुम्हें पता है इस बात के लिए मैं तुम्हारा सिर कलम कर सकता हूँ। लेकिन महेश हार माने वालों में से नहीं था, उसने झट से महाराज कि अंगूठी दरबान को दिखाई।
अब महाराज कि अंगूठी को न पहचानने कि हिम्मत दरबान में नहीं थी और ना चाहते हुए भी उसे महेश अंदर आने कि इजाज़त देनी पड़ी। हालांकि वह उसे नहीं जाने देना चाहता था इसलिए वह महेश से बोला ठीक है तुम अन्दर जा सकते हो लेकिन मेरी एक शर्त है. वो क्या, महेश ने आश्चर्य से पूछा. दरबान बोला, "तुम्हें महाराज जो भी ईनाम देंगे उसका आधा हिस्सा तुम मुझे दोगे"। महेश ने एक पल सोचा और फ़िर मुस्कुराकर बोला ठीक है, मुझे मंजूर है।
और इस प्रकार महेश ने महल के अन्दर प्रवेश किया, अन्दर उसने देखा महाराजा अकबर सोने के सिंहासन पर विराजमान हैं. धीरे-धीरे महेश अकबर के बिल्कुल करीब पहुँच गया और अकबर को झुक कर सलाम किया और कहा – आपकी कीर्ति सारे संसार में फैले।
अकबर मुस्कुराया और कहा, "तुम्हे क्या चाहिए, कौन हो तुम"? महेश अपने पंजों पर उचकते हुए कहा महाराज मैं यहाँ आपकी सेवा में आया हूँ. और यह कहते हुए महेश ने राजा कि दी हुई अंगूठी राजा के सामने रख दी. ओहो! याद आया, तुम महेश दास हो है ना जी महाराज मैं वही महेश हूँ।
बोलो महेश तुम्हें क्या चाहिए? महाराज मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप मुझे सौ कोडे मारिये. यह क्या कहा रहे हो महेश? राजा अकबर ने चौंकते हुए कहा। मैं ऐसा आदेश कैसे दे सकता हूँ जब तुमने कोई अपराध ही नहीं किया। महेश ने नम्रता से उत्तर दिया," नहीं महाराज, मुझे तो सौ कोडे ही मारिये"। अब ना चाहते हुए भी अकबर को सौ कोडे मारने का आदेश देना ही पड़ा।
जल्लाद ने कोडे मारने शुरू किए – एक, दो, तीन, चार, . . . . . . . . . . . पचास. बस महाराज बस, महेश ने दर्द के साथ कहा। क्यों क्या हुआ महेश दर्द हो रहा है क्या? नहीं महाराज ऐसी कोई बात नहीं है. मैं तो केवल अपना वादा पूरा करना चाहता हूँ. कैसा वादा महेश? महाराज जब मैं महल में प्रवेश कर रहा था तो दरबान ने मुझे इस शर्त पर अन्दर आने दिया कि मुझे जो भी उपहार प्राप्त होगा उसका आधा हिस्सा मैं दरबान को दूँगा। अपने हिस्से के पचास कोडे तो मैं खा चुका अब उस दरबान को भी उसका हिस्सा मिलना चाहिए। यह सुन कर सभी दरबारी हंसने लगे।
दरबान को बुलाया गया और उसको पचास कोडे लगाये गए. राजा ने महेश से कहा,"तुम बिल्कुल ही वेसे ही बहादुर और निडर हो जैसे बचपन में थे"। मैं अपने दरबार में से भ्रष्ट कर्मचारियों को पकड़ना चाहता था जिसके लिए मैंने बहुत से उपाय किए किंतु कोई भी काम नहीं आया. लेकिन यह काम तुमने जरा सी देर में ही कर दिया. तुम्हारी इसी बुद्धिमानी कि वजह से आज से तुम बीरबल कहालोगे। और तुम मेरे मुख्य सलाहकार नियुक्त किए जाते हो.
और इस तरह बीरबल का जन्म हुआ।

सबसे बड़ी चीज
एक दिन बीरबल दरबार में उपस्थित नहीं थे। ऐसे में बीरबल से जलने वाले सभी सभासद बीरबल के खिलाफ अकबर के कान भर रहे थे। अकसर ऐसा ही होता था, जब भी बीरबल दरबार में उपस्थित नहीं होते थे, तभी दरबारियों को मौका मिल जाता था। आज भी ऐसा ही मौका था।
बादशाह के साले मुल्ला दो प्याजा की शह पाए कुछ सभासदों ने कहा-"जहांपनाह! आप वास्तव में बीरबल को आवश्यकता से अधिक मान देते हैं, हम लोगों से ज्यादा उन्हें चाहते हैं। आपने उन्हें बहुत सिर चढ़ा रखा है। जबकि जो काम वे करते हैं, वह हम भी कर सकते हैं। मगर आप हमें मौका ही नहीं देते।"
बादशाह को बीरबल की बुराई अच्छी नहीं लगती थी, अतः उन्होंने उन चारों की परीक्षा ली-"देखो, आज बीरबल तो यहाँ हैं नहीं और मुझे अपने एक सवाल का जवाब चाहिए। यदि तुम लोगों ने मेरे प्रश्न का सही-सही जवाब नहीं दिया तो मैं तुम चारों को फांसी पर चढ़वा दूंगा।" बादशाह की बात सुनकर वे चारों घबरा गए।
उनमें से एक ने हिम्मत करके कहा-"प्रश्न बताइए बादशाह सलामत ?" "संसार में सबसे बड़ी चीज क्या है ? और अच्छी तरह सोच-समझ कर जवाब देना वरना मैं कह चुका हूं कि तुम लोगों को फांसी पर चढ़वा दिया जाएगा।" बादशाह अकबर ने कहा- "अटपटे जवाब हरगिज नहीं चलेंगे। जवाब एक हो और बिलकुल सही हो।" "बादशाह सलामत ? हमें कुछ दिनों की मोहलत दी जाए।" उन्होंने सलाह करके कहा।
"ठीक है, तुम लोगों को एक सप्ताह का समय देता हूं।" बादशाह ने कहा।
चारों दरबारी चले गए और दरबार से बाहर आकर सोचने लगे कि सबसे बड़ी चीज क्या हो सकती है ?
एक दरबारी बोला-"मेरी राय में तो अल्लाह से बड़ा कोई नहीं।"
"अल्लाह कोई चीज नहीं है। कोई दूसरा उत्तर सोचो।" दूसरा बोला।
"सबसे बड़ी चीज है भूख जो आदमी से कुछ भी करवा देती है।" तीसरे ने कहा।
"नहीं…नहीं, भूख भी बरदाश्त की जा सकती है।"
"फिर क्या है सबसे बड़ी चीज ?" छः दिन बीत गए लेकिन उन्हें कोई उत्तर नहीं सूझा। हार कर वे चारों बीरबल के पास पहुँचे और उसे पूरी घटना कह सुनाई, साथ ही हाथ जोड़कर विनती की कि प्रश्न का उत्तर बता दें।
बीरबल ने मुस्कराकर कहा-"मैं तुम्हारे प्रश्न का उत्तर दूंगा, लेकिन मेरी एक शर्त है।" "हमें आपकी हजार शर्तें मंजूर हैं।" चारों ने एक स्वर में कहा-"बस आप हमें इस प्रश्न का उत्तर बताकर हमारी जान बख्शी करवाएं। बताइए आपकी क्या शर्त है ?" "तुम में से दो अपने कन्धों पर मेरी चारपाई रखकर दरबार तक ले चलोगे। एक मेरा हुक्का पकड़ेगा, एक मेरे जूते लेकर चलेगा।" बीरबल ने अपनी शर्त बताते हुए कहा।
यह सुनते ही वे चारों सन्नाटे में आ गए। उन्हें लगा मानो बीरबल ने उनके गाल पर कसकर तमाचा मार दिया हो। मगर वे कुछ बोले नहीं। अगर मौत का खौफ न होता तो वे बीरबल को मुंहतोड़ जवाब देते, मगर इस समय मजबूर थे, अतः तुरन्त राजी हो गए।
दो ने अपने कन्धों पर बीरबल की चारपाई उठाई, तीसरे ने उनका हुक्का और चौथा जूते लेकर चल दिया। रास्ते में लोग आश्चर्य से उन्हें देख रहे थे। दरबार में बादशाह ने भी यह मंजर देखा और वह मौजूद दरबारियों ने भी। कोई कुछ न समझ सका। तभी बीरबल बोले-"महाराज ? दुनिया में सबसे बड़ी चीज है-गरज। अपनी गरज से ये पालकी यहां तक उठाकर लाए हैं।" बादशाह मुस्कराकर रह गए। वे चारों सिर झुकाकर एक ओर खड़े हो गए।

सब पर भारी बीरबल की चतुराई
बार अकबर बादशाह का दरबार लगा था। दरबार में सारे दरबारी, पंडित, मंत्री और सामान्यजन भी बैठे हुए थे। उस समय दरबार में हंसी-ठिठोली का माहौल छाया हुआ था। सब उसी में मशगूल थे। अकबर भी बहुत खुश नजर रहे थे। लेकिन एक बात थी जो अकबर को हमेशा ही खटकती रहती थी, वह यह कि राजदरबार के सभी दरबारी बीरबल के फैसले से बहुत जलते थे। बीरबल के आगे उनके फैसले की एक चलती थी।
इसलिए दरबारियों को बीरबल से बहुत ईर्ष्या थी, लेकिन वह बीरबल के सामने बोलने की हिम्मत जुटा नहीं पाते थे। बीरबल की दरबार में अनुपस्थिति होने पर अकबर हमेशा बीरबल की प्रशंसा के पुल बांधते रहते थे। जब बीरबल दरबार में अनुपस्थित रहता था तब दरबारी बीरबल के प्रति द्वेष का भाव रखकर अकबर बादशाह को भड़काने का काम करते रहते थे। लेकिन अकबर को बीरबल की चतुराई पर बहुत भरोसा था।
दरबार में चल रही हंसी-ठिठोली के बीच अकबर ने दरबारियों की परीक्षा लेने का मन ही मन विचार बनाया। उन्होंने सभी दरबारियों से शांत होने को कहा, और बोले-"ध्यान से सुनो, तुम सभी को मेरे एक सवाल का जवाब देना है। जो इस सवाल का जवाब सही देगा और उसे साबित कर दिखाएगा उसे मैं बीरबल की जगह अपना मंत्री नियुक्त कर दूंगा।"
अकबर ने कहा- "देखो तुम सबके लिए बहुत बढ़िया अवसर हाथ आया है। इससे तुम अपने मन के सभी अरमान पूरे कर सकते हो।" यह सुनकर सभी दरबारी बहुत खुश हुए।
अकबर ने फिर अपना सवालिया बाण छोड़ा और कहा, "देखो, तुम्हें यह साबित करना है कि मनुष्य द्वारा निर्मित चीज ज्यादा अच्छी होती है या कुदरत के द्वारा निर्मित।"
अकबर के मुंह से सवाल सुनते ही सभी दरबारी सोच में पड़ गए। अकबर ने उन्हें पूरे एक हफ्ते का समय दिया और कहा अगले शुक्रवार को जब दरबार लगेगा तो तुम्हें खुद को सबसे श्रेष्ठ साबित करना है। सब दरबारी अपने-अपने घर को हो लिए। सभी इसी सोच में डूबे थे कि इस बात को कैसे साबित किया जाए। लेकिन किसी में इतनी चतुराई भी तो नहीं थी जितनी कि बीरबल में। सारे दरबारियों में से किसी को भी इस सवाल का हल नहीं मिल पाया। तय समय के अनुसार फिर शुक्रवार के दिन राजदरबार लगा। सभी लोग अपने-अपने आसन पर विराजमान हो गए।
हालांकि, बीरबल सबसे पहले पहुंच गए थे। अब राजा ने एक-एक कर सभी से सवाल का जवाब मांगा, पर सभी दरबारी, मंत्री, पंडित अपनी गर्दन झुकाकर खड़े हो गए। अब अकबर से रहा गया।
उन्होंने बीरबल से पूछा। बीरबल ने बड़ा ही चतुराई भरा जवाब दिया, "जहांपनाह! इसमें कौन-सी बड़ी बात है। इसका जवाब बहुत ही आसान है। अभी लीजिए" कह कर वह अपने कुर्सी से उठकर बाहर चले गए।
यह देख दरबारियों में खुसर-फुसर शुरू हो गई। एक कहने लगा- "अरे यह क्या? बीरबल तो अकबर को जवाब देने के बजाय दरबार से उठकर बाहर चले गए।" अकबर आराम से अपने सिंहासन पर विराजमान हो गए और बीरबल की प्रतीक्षा करने लगे। तभी एक कारागीर हाथों में पत्थरों से निर्मित एक फूलों का बड़ा-सा गुलदस्ता लेकर आया और राजा को गुलदस्ता देकर जाने लगा। राजा ने गुलदस्ता हाथ में लिया और उसकी सुंदरता देखकर गुलदस्ते की बहुत तारीफ की।
अपने खजाने के मंत्री को आदेश दिया कि "इस कारीगर को एक हजार स्वर्ण मुद्राएं इनाम के तौर पर दी जाएं।" इनाम लेकर कारीगर खुशी-खुशी बाहर चला गया तभी अकबर के बगीचे का माली आया और एक बड़ा-सा गुलदस्ता को राजा को भेंट किया। इतना सुंदर गुलदस्ता देखकर राजा उसकी भी तारीफ किए बिना रह सका।
अकबर ने फिर अपने मंत्री को आदेश दिया और कहा- "माली को सौ चांदी की मुद्राएं इनाम के तौर पर दी जाए।" बस फिर क्या था, राजा का इतना आदेश हुआ कि बीरबल चतुराई भरा मुंह बनाकर दरबार में दाखिल हुए। पहले तो अकबर बीरबल पर बहुत नाराज हुए और कहने लगे, "शायद सभी दरबारी ठीक ही कहते हैं! मैंने ही तुम्हें जरूरत से ज्यादा तवज्जों दी है। इसीलिए तुम यूं बीच में ही राज दरबार छोड़कर चले गए और मेरे सवाल का जवाब भी नहीं दिया।"
अकबर का इतना कहना ही हुआ कि बीरबल ने अकबर को प्रणाम करते हुए कहा - "जहांपनाह, आप कुछ भूल रहे हैं। अभी-अभी जो दो कारीगर यहां उपस्थिति देकर गए हैं। उन्हें आपके पास भेजने के लिए ही मैं बाहर गया था। आपने यह कैसा न्याय किया, दो कारीगरों के साथ। एक को हजार स्वर्ण मुद्राएं और दूसरे को सिर्फ सौ चांदी की मुद्राएं।"
अकबर ने जवाब दिया- "असली फूलों का गुलदस्ता तो दो दिनों में ही मुरझा जाएगा और यह पत्थर से निर्मित गुलदस्ता कभी भी खराब नहीं होगा इसीलिए।" अकबर का इतना कहना ही था कि बीरबल ने अपना चतुराई भरा बाण छोड़ा और बोले- "तो फिर आप भी मान गए ना कि मनुष्य द्वारा निर्मित वस्तु कुदरत के द्वारा निर्मित वस्तु से ज्यादा अच्छी है।"
अब जहांपनाह की बोलती ही बंद हो गई। वे बीरबल की चतुराई देखकर मन ही मन मुस्काएं और फिर से अपने सिंहासन पर बैठ गए। सिंहासन पर बैठकर अकबर ने फिर एक बार बीरबल की खुले दिल से तारीफ की और सब दरबारी अपना मुंह लटका कर अपने-अपने कुर्सी पर बैठ गए। एक बार फिर बीरबल अपनी चतुराई दिखाने में कामयाब हो गए

अकबर बीरबल का प्यार
एक बार बादशाह अकबर और बीरबल के बीच मतभेद हो गया । बादशाह ने उन्हें दीवानीे से निकाल दिया। बीबरल चले गये कुछ दिनों बाद बादशाह को अपनी गलती का एहसास हुआ तो उन्होंने बीरबल को बुलाया तब पता चला कि बीरबल तो घर-बार छोड कर कही चले गये है।
बादशाह ने उनकी खोज करायी मगर वे नही मिले अंत में बादशाह ने ऐलान कराया कि जो व्यक्ति पांच सवालों के सही जवाब देगा उसे दिवान बनाया जाएगा। बहुत से लेाग आये मगर कोई भी दरबार की ओर से पूछे गये सवालों के जवाब न दे सका आखरी में एक मसखरा सा बुढा आया, उसकी परीक्षा शुरू हुई-
पहला सवाल, शरीर का पहला गुण क्या है ? उत्तर में उसने कहा – आरोग्यता दुसरा सवाल सबसे बडकर शस्त्र क्या है ? उत्तर – बुद्धि ही सबसे श्रेष्ठ शस्त्र है। तीसरा सवाल अगर चीनी और रेत मिल जाये तो जल में डालने के अलावा उनको अलग-अलग करने का क्या उपाया है? उत्तर – उनको प्रथ्वी पर फैला दिया जाये, चीनी को चीटियां उठा ले जायेगी और रेत पड़ी रह जायेगी।
चौथ सवाल क्या तुम समुद्र का पानी पी सकोगे ? उत्तर – आप समुद्र में जाने वाली सब नदियों का पानी उसमे जाना बंद कर दें तो मैं पी सकता हूं पांचवा सवाल, बिना आग के आदमी और किससे जलता है ? उत्तर – चिंता से
ऐसे उत्तर सुनकर सभी लोग आश्चर्यचकित रह गये और उसकी प्रशंसा करने लगे , अब एक सवाल का जवाब और दो बादशाह ने कहा- बीरबल कहां है ? उत्तर – आपके सामने, कहकर बीरबल ने अपना मस्करा वेश उतार दिया।
उसे देखकर बादशाह बेंहद खुश हुए और सिहासन से उठकर उसे गले से लगा लिया। ओह बीरबल तुम कहां चले गये थे, अब मुझसे कभी मत रूठना। उनका मिलन देखकर सभी दरबारी भावुक हो उठें। ऐसा था अकबर बीरबल का प्यार।

पैसे की थैली किसकी
दरबार लगा हुआ था। बादशाह अकबर राज-काज देख रहे थे। तभी दरबान ने सूचना दी कि दो व्यक्ति अपने झगड़े का निपटारा करवाने के लिए आना चाहते हैं।
बादशाह ने दोनों को बुलवा लिया। दोनों दरबार में आ गए और बादशाह के सामने झुककर खड़े हो गए।
"कहो क्या समस्या है तुम्हारी?" बादशाह ने पूछा।
"हुजूर मेरा नाम काशी है, मैं तेली हूं और तेल बेचने का धंधा करता हूं और हुजूर यह कसाई है। इसने मेरी दुकान पर आकर तेल खरीदा और साथ में मेरी पैसों की भरी थैली भी ले गया। जब मैंने इसे पकड़ा और अपनी थैली मांगी तो यह उसे अपनी बताने लगा, हुजूर अब आप ही न्याय करें।"
"जरूर न्याय होगा, अब तुम कहो तुम्हें क्या कहना है?" बादशाह ने कसाई से कहा। "हुजूर मेरा नाम रमजान है और मैं कसाई हूं, हुजूर, जब मैंने अपनी दुकान पर आज मांस की बिक्री के पैसे गिनकर थैली जैसे ही उठाई, यह तेली आ गया और मुझसे यह थैली छीन ली। अब उस पर अपना हक जमा रहा है, हुजूर, मुझ गरीब के पैसे वापस दिला दीजिए।"
दोनों की बातें सुनकर बादशाह सोच में पड़ गए। उन्हें समझ नहीं आ रहा था कि वह किसके हाथ फैसला दें। उन्होंने बीरबल से फैसला करने को कहा।
बीरबल ने उससे पैसों की थैली ले ली और दोनों को कुछ देर के लिए बाहर भेज दिया। बीरबल ने सेवक से एक कटोरे में पानी मंगवाया और उस थैली में से कुछ सिक्के निकालकर पानी में डाले और पानी को गौर से देखा। फिर बादशाह से कहा- "हुजूर, इस पानी में सिक्के डालने से तेल जरा-सा भी अंश पानी में नहीं उभार रहा है। यदि यह सिक्के तेली के होते तो यकीनन उन पर सिक्कों पर तेल लगा होता और वह तेल पानी में भी दिखाई देता।"
बादशाह ने भी पानी में सिक्के डाले, पानी को गौर से देखा और फिर बीरबल की बात से सहमत हो गए।
बीरबल ने उन दोनों को दरबार में बुलाया और कहा- "मुझे पता चल गया है कि यह थैली किसकी है।
काशी, तुम झूठ बोल रहे हो, यह थैली रमजान कसाई की है।"
"हुजूर यह थैली मेरी है।"काशी एक बार फिर बोला।
बीरबल ने सिक्के डले पानी वाला कटोरा उसे दिखाते हुए कहा- "यदि यह थैली तुम्हारी है तो इन सिक्कों पर कुछ-न-कुछ तेल अवश्य होना चाहिए, पर तुम भी देख लो… तेल तो अंश मात्र भी नजर नहीं आ रहा है।"
काशी चुप हो गया।
बीरबल ने रमजान कसाई को उसकी थैली दे दी और काशी को कारागार में डलवा दिया।

भाई जैसा
बादशाह अकबर तब बहुत छोटे थे, जब उनकी मां का देहांत हुआ था। चूंकि वह बहुत छोटे थे, इसलिए उन्हें मां के दूध की दरकार थी। महल में तब एक दासी रहती थी, जिसका शिशु भी दुधमुंहा था। वह नन्हें अकबर को दूध पिलाने को राजी हो गई। दासी का वह पुत्र व अकबर दोनों साथ-साथ दासी का दूध पीने लगे।
दासी के पुत्र का नाम हुसिफ था। चूंकि हुसिफ व अकबर ने एक ही स्त्री का दुग्धपान किया था, इसलिए वे दूध-भाई हो गए थे। अकबर को भी लगाव था हुसिफ से।
समय बीतता रहा। अकबर बादशाह बन गए और देश के सर्वाधिक शक्तिशाली सम्राट बने। लेकिन हुसिफ एक मामूली दरबारी तक न बन पाया। उसकी मित्रता जुआरियों के साथ थी और कुछ ऐसे लोग भी उसके साथी थे, जो पैसा फिजूल बहाया करते थे। एक समय ऐसा आया जब हुसिफ के पास दो समय के भोजन के लिए भी पैसा पास न था। लोगों ने तब उसे बादशाह के पास जाने को कहा।
हुसिफ ने बादशाह अकबर के पास जाने की तैयारी शुरू कर दी।
हुसिफ के दरबार में पहुंचते ही बादशाह ने उसे ऐसे गले लगाया जैसे उसका सगा भाई ही हो। लंबे अर्से के बाद हुसिफ को देख बादशाह बेहद खुश थे। उन्होंने उसकी हर संभव सहायता करनी चाही।
हुसिफ को अकबर ने दरबार में नौकरी दे दी। रहने के लिए बड़ा मकान, नौकर-चाकर, घोड़ागाड़ी भी दी। निजी खर्च के लिए एक मोटी रकम हर महीने उसको मिलती थी।
अब हुसिफ की जिन्दगी अमन-चैन से गुजर रही थी। उसे किसी चीज की कोई कमी नहीं थी।
"यदि तुम्हारी कुछ और जरूरतें हों, तो बेहिचक कह डालो। सब पूरी की जाएंगी।" बादशाह ने हुसिफ से कहा।
तब हुसिफ ने जवाब दिया, "आपने अब तक जितना दिया है वह काफी है शाही जीवन बिताने को, बादशाह सलामत। आपने मुझे इज्जत बख्शी, सर उठाकर चलने की हैसियत दी। मुझसे ज्यादा खुश और कौन होगा। मेरे लिए यह भी फक्र की बात है कि देश का सम्राट मुझे अपना भाई मानता है। और क्या चाहिए हो सकता है मुझे।" कहते हुए उसने सिर खुजाया, होंठों पर अहसान भरी मुस्कान थी। लेकिन लगता था उसे कुछ और भी चाहिए था। वह बोला, "मैं महसूस करता हूं कि बीरबल जैसे बुद्धिमान व योग्य व्यक्ति के साथ रहूं। मेरी ख्वाहिश है कि जैसे बीरबल आपका सलाहकार है, वैसा ही मुझे भी कोई सलाह देने वाला हो।"
बादशाह अकबर ने हुसिफ की यह इच्छा भी पूरी करने का फैसला किया। उन्होंने बीरबल को बुलाकर कहा, "हुसिफ मेरे भाई जैसा है। मैंने उसे जीवन के सभी ऐशो-आराम उपलब्ध करा दिए हैं, लेकिन अब वह तुम्हारे जैसा योग्य सलाहकार चाहता है। तुम अपने जैसा बल्कि यह समझो अपने भाई जैसा कोई व्यक्ति लेकर आओ जो हुसिफ का मन बहला सके। वह बातूनी न हो, पर जो भी बोले, नपा-तुला बोले। उसकी बात का कोई मतलब होना चाहिए। समझ गए न कि मैं क्या चाहता हूं।"
पहले तो बीरबल समझ ही न पाया कि बादशाह ऐसा क्यों चाहते हैं। उसे हुसिफ में ऐसी कोई खूबी दिखाई न देती थी।
"जी हुजूर!" बीरबल बोला, "आप चाहते हैं कि मैं ऐसा आदमी खोजकर लाऊं जो मेरे भाई जैसा हो।"
"ठीक समझे हो।" बादशाह ने कहा।
अब बीरबल सोचने लगा कि ऐसा कौन हो सकता है, जो उसके भाई जैसा हो। हुसिफ भाग्यशाली है जो बादशाह उसे अपना भाई मानते हैं और उसे सारे ऐशो-आराम उपलब्ध करा दिए हैं। लेकिन बीरबल को हुसिफ की यह मांग जची नहीं कि उसके पास भी बीरबल जैसा सलाहकार हो। बादशाह बेहद सम्मान करते थे बीरबल का और बीरबल भी बादशाह पर जान छिड़कता था। लेकिन हुसिफ तो इस लायक कतई नहीं था। अब बीरबल सोच ही रहा था कि समस्या को हल कैसे किया जाए, तभी पास की पशुशाला से सांड़ के रंभाने की आवाज आई। बीरबल तुरंत खड़ा हो गया। आखिरकार उसे अपने भाई जैसा कोई मिल ही गया था।
अगले दिन उस सांड़ के साथ बीरबल महल में जाकर अकबर के सामने खड़ा हो गया।
"तुम अपने साथ इस सांड़ को लेकर यहां क्यों आए हो, बीरबल ?" अकबर ने पूछा।
"यह मेरा भाई है, बादशाह सलामत।" बीरबल बोला, "हम दोनों एक ही मां का दूध पीकर बड़े हुए हैं….गऊ माता का दूध पीकर। इसलिए यह सांड़ मेरे भाई जैसा है…दूध-भाई। यह बोलता भी बहुत कम है। जो इसकी भाषा समझ लेता है, उसे यह कीमती सलाह भी देता है। इसे हुसिफ को दे दें, मेरे जैसा सलाहकार पाने की उसकी इच्छा पूरी हो जायगी।"
बीरबल का यह उत्तर सुनकर अकबर को अपनी गलती का अहसास हुआ। तब उन्हें लगा कि जैसे उन जैसा कोई दूसरा नहीं, वैसे ही बीरबल भी एक ही है।

ईश्वर अच्छा ही करता है
बीरबल एक ईमानदार तथा धर्म-प्रिय व्यक्ति था। वह प्रतिदिन ईश्वर की आराधना बिना नागा किया करता था। इससे उसे नैतिक व मानसिक बल प्राप्त होता था। वह अक्सर कहा करता था कि "ईश्वर जो कुछ भी करता है मनुष्य के भले के लिए ही करता है।
कभी-कभी हमें ऐसा लगता है कि ईश्वर हम पर कृपादृष्टि नहीं रखता, लेकिन ऐसा होता नहीं। कभी-कभी तो उसके वरदान को भी लोग शाप समझने की भूल कर बैठते हैं। वह हमको थोड़ी पीड़ा इसलिए देता है ताकि बड़ी पीड़ा से बच सकें।"
एक दरबारी को बीरबल की ऐसी बातें पसंद न आती थीं। एक दिन वही दरबारी दरबार में बीरबल को संबोधित करता हुआ बोला, "देखो, ईश्वर ने मेरे साथ क्या किया-कल-शाम को जब मैं जानवरों के लिए चारा काट रहा था तो अचानक मेरी छोटी उंगली कट गई। क्या अब भी तुम यही कहोगे कि ईश्वर ने मेरे लिए यह अच्छा किया है ?"
कुछ देर चुप रहने के बाद बोला बीरबल, "मेरा अब भी यही विश्वास है क्योंकि ईश्वर जो कुछ भी करता है मनुष्य के भले के लिए ही करता है।"
सुनकर वह दरबारी नाराज हो गया कि मेरी तो उंगली कट गई और बीरबल को इसमें भी अच्छाई नजर आ रही है। मेरी पीड़ा तो जैसे कुछ भी नहीं। कुछ अन्य दरबारियों ने भी उसके सुर में सुर मिलाया।
तभी बीच में हस्तक्षेप करते हुए बादशाह अकबर बोले, "बीरबल हम भी अल्लाह पर भरोसा रखते हैं, लेकिन यहां तुम्हारी बात से सहमत नहीं। इस दरबारी के मामले में ऐसी कोई बात नहीं दिखाई देती जिसके लिए उसकी तारीफ की जाए।"
बीरबल मुस्कराता हुआ बोला, "ठीक है जहांपनाह, समय ही बताएगा अब।"
तीन महीने बीत चुके थे। वह दरबारी, जिसकी उंगली कट गई थी, घने जंगल में शिकार खेलने निकला हुआ था। एक हिरन का पीछा करते वह भटककर आदिवासियों के हाथों में जा पड़ा। वे आदिवासी अपने देवता को प्रसन्न करने के लिए मानव बलि में विश्वास रखते थे। अतः वे उस दरबारी को पकड़कर मंदिर में ले गए, बलि चढ़ाने के लिए। लेकिन जब पुजारी ने उसके शरीर का निरीक्षण किया तो हाथ की एक उंगली कम पाई।
"नहीं, इस आदमी की बलि नहीं दी जा सकती।" मंदिर का पुजारी बोला, "यदि नौ उंगलियों वाले इस आदमी को बलि चढ़ा दिया गया तो हमारे देवता बजाय प्रसन्न होने के क्रोधित हो जाएंगे, अधूरी बलि उन्हें पसंद नहीं। हमें महामारियों, बाढ़ या सूखे का प्रकोप झेलना पड़ सकता है। इसलिए इसे छोड़ देना ही ठीक होगा।"
और उस दरबारी को मुक्त कर दिया गया।
अगले दिन वह दरबारी दरबार में बीरबल के पास आकर रोने लगा।
तभी बादशाह भी दरबार में आ पहुंचे और उस दरबारी को बीरबल के सामने रोता देखकर हैरान रह गए।
"तुम्हें क्या हुआ, रो क्यों रहे हो ?" अकबर ने सवाल किया।
जवाब में उस दरबारी ने अपनी आपबीती विस्तार से कह सुनाई। वह बोला, "अब मुझे विश्वास हो गया है कि ईश्वर जो कुछ भी करता है, मनुष्य के भले के लिए ही करता है। यदि मेरी उंगली न कटी होती तो निश्चित ही आदिवासी मेरी बलि चढ़ा देते। इसीलिए मैं रो रहा हूं, लेकिन ये आंसू खुशी के हैं। मैं खुश हूं क्योंकि मैं जिन्दा हूं। बीरबल के ईश्वर पर विश्वास को संदेह की दृष्टि से देखना मेरी भूल थी।"
अकबर ने मंद-मंद मुस्कराते हुए दरबारियों की ओर देखा, जो सिर झुकाए चुपचाप खड़े थे। अकबर को गर्व महसूस हो रहा था कि बीरबल जैसा बुद्धिमान उसके दरबारियों में से एक है।

मूर्खों से मिली बुद्धि
सम्राट अकबर कभी जरूरत से, कभी मनोरंजन के लिए बीरबल से कठिन प्रश्न करता।
एक दिन बादशाह ने पूछा- "तुम्हें तीक्ष्ण बुद्धि कहां से मिली?"
बीरबल- "जहांपनाह, यह मुझे मूर्खों से मिली है!"
प्रश्न जितना सरल, उत्तर उतना ही ज्यादा उलझन और चक्कर में डालने वाला, हैरान करने वाला! मूर्ख के पास तो बुद्धि होती ही नहीं, बुद्धि होती तो वे मूर्ख क्यों कहलाते। और जो चीज जिसके पास में नहीं है, उसे वे कैसे दूसरे को दे सकते हैं? अत: अकबर से रहा नहीं गया।
बादशाह अकबर ने पूछा- "मूर्खों से?"
बीरबल- "हां! मूर्खों से।" जिस आचरण और व्यवहार के कारण आदमी मूर्ख कहलाता है, मैं उनसे बचता रहा।इससे मेरा बुद्धिमान बनने का रास्ता साफ होता गया।

When the soldiers saw this, they caught him and presented him in front of the king. The king asked in a shrill voice, "O boy, which road leads to Agra"? The boy smiled and said, "Sir, if this road cannot run, how will it go to Agra". You will have to go to Maharaj and saying this he laughed with gusto.
All the soldiers stood silent, aware of the anger of the king. The boy again said, "Sir, people walk, not the way". This time the king smiled and said, "No, you are right. What is your name, Akbar asked. My name is Mahesh Das Maharaj, the boy replied, and who are you? Akbar took out his ring." Giving it to Mahesh Das said, "You are talking to Maharaja Akbar - Emperor of Hindustan". I like fearless people. You come to my court and show me this ring. I will recognize you after seeing this ring. Now you Tell me which way should I follow so that I can reach Agra.
Mahesh Das bowed his head and told the way to Agra and kept looking at the emperor of India on his way.

Birbal caught the thief
Once there was a theft in the kingdom of King Akbar. In this theft, a thief stole a very valuable item from a merchant's house. The merchant had full faith in the fact that the thief was one of his 10 servants, but he did not know who he was.
To find out who the thief is! The merchant went to Birbal and asked Birbal for help. Birbal also agreed to this point and asked his soldiers to put all the 10 servants in jail/jail. On hearing this, all the servants were caught by the soldiers on the same day. Birbal asked everyone who had committed the theft, but no one refused to believe that he had committed the theft.
Birbal thought for a while, and after a while he brought ten sticks of equal length and handed each of the chosen ones a stick. But while holding the stick, Birbal said one thing! That person's stick will grow to be 2 inches. The person who stole it. Saying this Birbal went away and instructed his soldiers that none of them should be released till morning.
When Birbal carefully looked at the sticks of all the servants in the morning, he came to know that the stick of one of the servants was 2 inches shorter. Seeing this, Birbal said! That's the thief.
After seeing this, the merchant asked Birbal how he came to know that he was the thief. Birbal said that the thief had shortened his stick by 2 inches during the night itself due to the fear of his stick becoming 2 inches bigger.

Once Emperor Akbar ordered a craftsman to make armored iron clothes, which the soldiers wear on the occasion of war. According to the orders of the king, after a few days, the artisan prepared the Bakhtar Bandh and presented it in front of the emperor.
The artisan left no stone unturned in making it. Akbar emperor liked that iron cloth very much, but in the second moment he started doubting its strength. He ordered him to put on a sackcloth effigy and with the sword himself proceeded to test his strength. As soon as Akbar attacked that Bakhtar Bandh, it exploded in one shot.
Seeing this, the king got angry and said so weak Bakhtar….. oh fool, if we had taken this to a war without testing it, what would have been the defense? Go and bring another strong armor, but remember that if he too becomes weak like this, then your neck will be blown off.
The artisan was frightened after hearing the wrathful order of Akbar, but what he would have done, he returned to his home after saluting the Emperor Akbar with admiration. Seeing his face, his wife asked the reason,
Then the artisan told about the order of the emperor Akbar and said that now it is difficult to save my life. His wife was very smart, started saying why are you scared at the slightest thing, why don't you go to Birbal and ask any way to escape? Encouraged by the words of his wife, the artisan went to Birbal and after telling all the things, prayed for his life.
Birbal consoled him and said, take that iron armor to Akbar's emperor's place. When Akbar emperor orders the wooden effigy to be armored, then tell him it cannot be tested on a wooden effigy, I myself wear it. , then Akbar the emperor will surely accept your prayer, but take care as soon as he or someone else swoops down to shoot a sword on the armor, you suddenly create a very terrible situation by shouting.
So that his hand trembles and he stands distraught, if he can do the right thing well, then surely your life will be saved. On being asked by Emperor Akbar, the reason is to tell that the person wearing this armor of mine will have a wooden effigy or must have some power, then why will he allow his opponent to beat around him?
And even if an enemy comes near, the person wearing the armor will have some fear of doubt and he will not be able to break the armor easily like this. The artisan understood the strategy told by Birbal. After two or three days, after making another iron armor, he went to the court of Emperor Akbar. Emperor Akbar again ordered Bakhtar to wear a wooden effigy.
The artisan repeated Birbal's statement and prayed to Akbar that Bakhtar should be tested on his body, Akbar the emperor accepted his request and ordered a clever soldier to take the test of Bakhtar by wielding a sly sword. As soon as the soldier raised the sword to shoot, the artisan lashed out towards the soldier with a stern force that the soldier's sword remained raised and he stood away in fear.
Akbar Emperor asked the artisan the reason for doing this, the artisan replied to Akbar according to the instructions of Birbal. Akbar, the emperor, heard this and said, "You are right, but tell the truth, who gave you this advice?" Karigar told the truth in the court. Akbar was very pleased with the cleverness of Birbal and all the courtiers.

Birbal and the greedy shopkeeper
Once Birbal was met by the people of the city and complained about a greedy pottery shopkeeper that he was too greedy. Teach him a lesson. Hearing this, Birbal went to the shopkeeper and bought three big pots from there. After a few days, he took a very small vessel and reached the greedy shopkeeper and said,
"Your big pot gave this baby, please keep it." The shopkeeper was very happy and happily took the small pot. After a few days Birbal took a big pot and went to the shopkeeper and said, "I don't like this pot, please return my money to me." The shopkeeper said, "But this is only one, though I gave you three pots."
Birbal said, "Yes, actually two husbands have died." The shopkeeper replied, "Go-go why do you make fools? Do husbands die?" Birbal replied, "Why not, when children of husbands can be born, so can death."
The shopkeeper had to return Birbal's money. And the shopkeeper also got "Seer Ka Saar Saar". There is no answer to Birbal's intelligence.

Emperor Akbar was so fond of horse riding that he was ready to pay an exorbitant price for a horse if he liked it. Horse sellers from distant countries, such as Arabia, Persia, etc. used to come to the court with strong and attractive horses. The emperor used to pay a good price for the horse selected for his personal use. Horses that were not of interest to the emperor were bought for the army.
Horse sellers had a good business in Akbar's court.
One day a new seller of horses came to the court. The other merchants also did not know him. He sold two very attractive horses to the emperor and said that he could bring exactly a hundred more horses provided he was given half the price in advance.
Since the king was very fond of horses, he immediately made up his mind to get a hundred more horses.
The emperor called his cashier and asked the merchant to pay half the amount. The cashier took that merchant towards the treasury. But no one found it appropriate that the emperor had given such a huge amount to an unknown merchant as an advance. But no one had the courage to protest.
Everyone wanted Birbal to take up this matter.
Birbal was also not happy with this deal. He said, "Huzoor! Yesterday you asked me to make a list of idiots across the city. I'm sorry your name tops that list."
Emperor Akbar's face turned red with anger. He felt that Birbal had insulted him in front of foreign guests in a packed court.
The angry king shouted, "How dare you call us fools?"
"Sorry, the king is safe." Birbal bowing his head said in a respectful tone, if you wish, get my head beheaded, if you feel wrong to put your name at the top of the list of fools prepared at your behest.
There was such silence in the court that if the needle fell, the sound could be heard.
Now Emperor Akbar raised his right hand, proceeding to taunt the index finger towards Birbal. The breath of all the people present in the court had stopped. Eagerness and excitement danced on everyone's faces. They thought that Emperor Salamat would behead Birbal from his torso. Before this no one had the courage to call the emperor a fool.
But the emperor put his hand on Birbal's shoulder. He wanted to know the reason.
Birbal understood what the emperor wanted. He said, "You paid a hefty amount in advance to such a horse trader, whose whereabouts no one knows. He can cheat you too. That's why your name tops the list of fools. That merchant may not come back now. He will settle in some other country and you will not be found.
Before making any deal with anyone, there should be information about him. The merchant sold you only two horses and you were so fascinated that he gave the huge amount to him without even knowing it. That's just the reason."
"Go to the treasury immediately and stop the payment." Akbar immediately ran to one of his servants.
Birbal said, "Your name will no longer be in that list."
Emperor Akbar stared at Birbal for a few moments, then focused his eyes on the courtiers and laughed. Everyone heaved a sigh of relief that the emperor had realized his mistake. The courtiers also joined in laughter and praised Birbal's cleverness with one voice.

One day a poet went to meet a rich man and recited many beautiful poems to him with the hope that perhaps he would give some reward to the rich man. But that rich man was also very miser, said, "Heart was happy to hear your poems. You come again tomorrow, I will make you happy."
"Tomorrow there will probably be a good reward." Imagining this, the poet reached home and fell asleep. The next day he again reached the mansion of that rich man. The rich man said, "Listen, sir, just as you made me happy by reciting your poems, I am also happy to call you.
The poet became very disappointed. He narrated his own past to a friend and that friend told Birbal. Hearing this, Birbal said, "Now do as I say. You befriend that rich man and invite him to your house for dinner. Yes, don't forget to call your poet friend too. I will be there."
A few days later, according to Birbal's plan, the lunch program was fixed at the house of the poet's friend. At the appointed time, the rich also arrived. At that time Birbal, the poet and some other friends were busy in conversation. Time was passing but there was no sign of food and drink anywhere. They were busy in conversation like before. The restlessness of the rich was increasing, when he could not stop, he had to say, "When is the time for the meal? Have we not come here for dinner?"
"Food, what kind of food?" Birbal asked.
The rich man now got angry, "What do you mean? Have you not invited me here for dinner?"
"There was no invitation to eat. It was an invitation to come over for dinner to please you." Birbal replied. The wealthy's mercury soared to the seventh heaven, saying in an angry voice, "What is all this? Is it okay to dishonor a respectable man like this? You have deceived me."
Now Birbal laughed and said, "If I say that there is nothing wrong in this then…. You had deceived this poet by saying that you did not come tomorrow, so I also did something similar. Treat people like you like this." Needed."

Birbal answer three questions
Birbal was very dear to King Akbar. He used to take many of his decisions in the meeting on the strength of Birbal's cunning and intelligence. Seeing this, hatred towards Birbal was awakened in the minds of some of the courtiers. Together those courtiers made a plan to make Birbal look inferior in front of Emperor Akbar.
In a day-long meeting, those courtiers said in front of Akbar that if Birbal answers our 3 questions, then we will agree that there is no one wiser than Birbal. Emperor Akbar always stood ready to test Birbal's intelligence. On hearing this, King Akbar said yes.
The 3 questions were as follows –
Question 1: How many stars are there in the unequal?
Question 2: Where is the center of this earth?
Question 3: How many men and women are there in this earth?
On hearing this, Akbar immediately said to Birbal! If you are not able to answer these questions then you will have to relinquish your post of Chief Minister.
To answer the first question, Birbal came to a sheep with thick hair and said that there are as many stars in the sky as there are hairs in the body of this sheep. If my court friend wants to count all the hairs of this sheep, they can count.
To answer the second question, Birbal started drawing some lines on the ground and after some time he buried an iron stick and said that this is the center of the earth. If my court friends want to measure, they can measure themselves.
In answer to the third question, Birbal said, by the way, it is very difficult to tell how many men and how many women are there in this world because there are some people in this world who cannot be included in that calculation like our court friend. . If we kill such people, then we will also be able to calculate.
Hearing this, all the courtiers lowered their heads and said! Birbal, there is no one more intelligent than you

When Mahesh Das became young, he went to King Birbal to try his luck. He also had a ring given to him by the king which he had received from the king sometime back. With the blessings of his mother, he moved towards the new capital of India – Fataipur Sikri.
Mahesh Das was bewildered to see the new capital of India. He walked towards the red-walled palace, avoiding the crowd. The gate of the palace was very big and decorated with precious stones, such a door Mahesh Das had never seen even in his dreams. As soon as he wanted to enter the palace, then the concierge with the stubby mustache waved his spear in the air.
"Where do you think you are entering"? The guard asked in a thundering voice. Sir, I have come to meet Maharaj, replied Mahesh humbly. "Okay! So the lord is waiting for you, when will you come"? The doorman asked while laughing. Mahesh smiled and said, "Absolutely sir, and look, I have come". And yes, "You must be very brave and brave, but you are risking your life by preventing me from entering the palace". Hearing this, the concierge was shocked, but still courageously said, "Why are you saying this"? You know I can behead you for this. But Mahesh was not one to give up, he hurriedly showed Maharaj's ring to the concierge.
Now the concierge did not have the courage not to recognize the ring of Maharaj. And even without wanting, she had to allow Mahesh to come inside. Although he did not want to let her go, so he said to Mahesh, okay you can go inside but I have one condition. What is that, Mahesh asked in surprise. The concierge said, "You will give me half of the reward that the Maharaja will give you". Mahesh thought for a moment and then smiled and said okay, I agree.
And thus Mahesh entered inside the palace, inside he saw Maharaja Akbar sitting on a golden throne. Slowly Mahesh reached very close to Akbar and bowed down and saluted Akbar and said – spread your fame all over the world.

One day Birbal was not present in the court. In such a situation, all the members who were jealous of Birbal were filling Akbar's ears against Birbal. It often happened like this, whenever Birbal was not present in the court, only then the courtiers got a chance. Today was a similar occasion.
Some of the members, supported by Mulla do Pyaza, the brother-in-law of the emperor, said- "Jahanpanah! You really value Birbal more than necessary, we love him more than the people. You have given him a lot of heads up. While the work he used to do." Yes, we can do that too. But you don't even give us a chance."
The emperor did not like Birbal's evil, so he tested all four of them - "Look, Birbal is not here today and I want an answer to my question. If you did not answer my question correctly, then I will get all four of you hanged." All four of them were terrified on hearing the king's words.
One of them courageously said - "Tell the question, is the emperor safe?" "What is the biggest thing in the world? And answer carefully or else I have said that you will be hanged." Emperor Akbar said- "Awkward answers will not work at all. The answer should be one and absolutely correct." "Badshah safe? We should be given a few days' grace." He advised.
"Okay, give you guys a week's time." said the emperor.
The four courtiers left and came out of the court and started thinking that what can be the biggest thing?
A courtier said - "In my opinion there is no one greater than Allah."
"Allah is not a thing. Think of some other answer." Said another.
"The biggest thing is hunger which makes a man do anything." The third one said.
"No… no, hunger can be tolerated too."
"Then what's the biggest thing?" Six days passed but they could not find any answer. Defeated, all four of them reached Birbal and narrated the whole incident to him, and with folded hands requested him to tell the answer to the question.
Birbal smiled and said - "I will answer your question, but I have one condition." "We accept your thousand terms." All four said in one voice - "Just let us know the answer to this question and save our life. Tell me what is your condition?" "Two of you will carry my cot on your shoulders and take me to the court. One will hold my hookah, one will carry my shoes." Birbal said while stating his condition.
Hearing this, all four of them fell into silence. He felt as if Birbal had slapped him tightly on his cheek. But they didn't say anything. If there was no fear of death, he would have given a befitting reply to Birbal, but was compelled at this time, so he immediately agreed.
Two carried Birbal's cot on his shoulders, the third carried his hookah and the fourth carried his shoes. On the way people were looking at him in amazement. The emperor also saw this scene in the court and the courtiers present also saw it. No one could understand anything. Then Birbal said - "Maharaj? The biggest thing in the world is thunder. With your thunder, you have brought this palanquin here." The emperor smiled. They bowed their heads and stood aside.

Hot Iron Test
One day, one man wanted to punish a man named Hasan. He accused him of stealing his necklace, and reported this theft in the police. The case was brought in the Judge's court. Judge knew Hasan very well, and he also knew that he was not a thief.
So he asked the man, "Why do you think that Hasan has stolen your necklace?" The man replied, "Your Honor, I have seen him stealing the necklace." Hasan said, "I am innocent, Your Honor. I do not know anything about his necklace."
The man then said, "All right, if he is innocent, let him prove his innocence. let me bring the hot iron, and if he can hold it in his bare hands, then I will agree that he has not stolen my necklace, and he is speaking truth."
The man said, "It means that if I am speaking the truth, then I will not burn my hands with that red hot iron?" "Yes, you are right. God will protect you."
Now Hasan could not do anything but to hold red hot iron in his hands to prove his innocence, and that he was speaking the truth. He asked judge to give him one day to look for that necklace again. The judge gave him permission. He went home.
He took advice from Birbal. He returned next day he came back and said, "I am ready for that, Sir, if you think so. But the same thing should apply to him too. If he is speaking the truth, then the red hot iron should not burn his hands also. So let him bring that red hot iron holding in his both hands, then I will hold that iron in my bare hands."
Now the man was speechless. He told the Judge that he would go and search his necklace again in his house, maybe it was misplaced somewhere there, bowed hastily and went away.
Akbar Emperor asked the artisan the reason for doing this, the artisan replied to Akbar according to the instructions of Birbal. Akbar, the emperor, heard this and said, "You are right, but tell the truth, who gave you this advice?" Karigar told the truth in the court. Akbar was very pleased with the cleverness of Birbal and all the courtiers.

The emperor got them searched but they could not be found, in the end the emperor announced that the person who gives the correct answers to five questions will be made Diwan. Many people came but no one could answer the questions asked by the court. At last a prankster-like old man came, his examination started-
First question, what is the first quality of the body? In response, he said – Health and the second question, what is the biggest weapon? Answer – Intelligence is the best weapon. Third question If sugar and sand are mixed, then what is the way to separate them apart from putting them in water? Answer – If they are spread on the earth, the sugar will be taken away by the ants and the sand will remain lying.
Fourth question Will you be able to drink sea water? Answer – If you stop the water of all the rivers going into the sea, then I can drink the fifth question, a man without fire burns with whom? Answer – With concern
Everyone was surprised to hear such answers and started praising him, now the answer to one question and two kings said - Where is Birbal? Answer – Saying in front of you, Birbal took off his mascara.
Seeing him, the emperor was very happy and got up from the throne and hugged him. Oh Birbal, where have you gone, now don't ever get angry with me. Seeing their union, all the courtiers became emotional. Such was the love of Akbar Birbal.

The court was held. Emperor Akbar was watching the kingdom. Then the concierge informed that two persons wanted to come to settle their quarrel.
The emperor called both of them. Both came to the court and bowed before the emperor and stood.
"Say what's your problem?" The emperor asked.
"Huzoor my name is Kashi, I am a teller and do the business of selling oil and Huzoor this is a butcher. He came to my shop and bought oil and also took my bag of money along with it. When I grabbed it and asked for my bag So it started telling him as his own, now you judge yourself."
"Sure justice will be done, now you say what do you have to say?" The king said to the butcher. “Huzoor my name is Ramzan and I am a butcher, Huzoor, when I picked up the bag after counting the money for the sale of meat at my shop today, this telly came and snatched this bag from me. Now I am claiming my right on it, Huzoor, get me back the money of the poor."
Hearing the words of both, the emperor fell into thought. He did not understand in whose hands he should give the decision. He asked Birbal to decide.
Birbal took the money bag from him and sent both of them out for some time. Birbal asked the servant for water in a bowl and took out some coins from that bag and put it in the water and looked at the water carefully. Then he said to the emperor- "Huzoor, by putting coins in this water, even a little bit of oil is not rising in the water. If these coins were of Teli, then surely they would have been oiled on the coins and that oil would have been visible in the water also." "
The emperor also put coins in the water, looked at the water carefully and then agreed with Birbal.
Birbal called both of them to the court and said- "I have come to know whose bag is this.
Kashi, you are lying, this bag belongs to Ramzan Butcher."
"Sir, this bag is mine." Kashi said once again.
Birbal showed him a bowl of water containing the coins and said- "If this bag is yours, then there must be some oil on these coins, but you also see… not even a fraction of oil is visible."
Kashi fell silent.
Birbal gave Ramzan the butcher his bag and put Kashi in jail.

Emperor Akbar was very young when his mother died. Since he was very young, he needed mother's milk. A maidservant lived in the palace then, whose infant was also mild-mouthed. She agreed to give milk to little Akbar. The maid's son and Akbar both started drinking the maid's milk together.
The name of the maid's son was Husif. Since Husif and Akbar had milked the same woman, they became milk brothers. Akbar too liked Husif.
Time kept on passing by. Akbar became the emperor and became the most powerful emperor of the country. But Husif could not even become a minor courtier .. He was friends with gamblers and some people were also his friends who used to waste money. There came a time when Husif did not have money even for two meals. The people then asked him to go to the emperor.
Husif started preparing to go to Emperor Akbar.
As soon as Husif reached the court, the emperor hugged him as if he was his real brother. The emperor was very happy to see Husif after a long time. He tried to offer him all the possible help.
Akbar employed Husif in his court. He also gave a big house, servants, horse carriage to live. He used to get a hefty amount every month for personal expenses.
Now Husif's life was passing peacefully. There was no shortage of things for him.
"If you have any other needs, feel free to say so. All will be covered." The emperor said to Husif.
Then Husif replied, "What you have given so far is enough to live a royal life, King Salamat. You have given me respect and status to walk with my head raised. Who else will be happier than me. It is also a matter of pride for me." It is that the emperor of the country considers me his brother. What else can I need." He nodded his head, a grateful smile on his lips. But it seemed as if he needed something else too. He said, "I feel that I should be with such an intelligent and capable person like Birbal. I wish that like Birbal is your mentor, there should be someone to give me advice as well."
Emperor Akbar decided to fulfill this wish of Husif as well. He called Birbal and said, "Husif is like my brother. I have provided him with all the luxuries of life, but now he wants a qualified mentor like you. You should bring someone like your brother who is like you. Husif's mind should be entertained. He should not be talkative, but whatever he said, he should speak well. His words should have some meaning. Got it, not what I want."
At first Birbal could not understand why the emperor wanted this. He did not see any such quality in Husif.
"Yes sir!" Birbal said, "You want me to find a man who is like my brother."
"You get it right." said the emperor.
Now Birbal started thinking that who can be such, who is like his brother. Husif is fortunate that the emperor considers him his brother and has provided him with all the luxuries. But Birbal did not like Husif's demand that he should also have an advisor like Birbal. The emperor had great respect for Birbal and Birbal also used to sprinkle his life on the emperor. But Husif was never fit for being this way. Now Birbal was thinking how to solve the problem, when the sound of the bull rumbling came from the nearby cattle shed. Birbal stood up immediately. Eventually he had found someone like his brother.
The next day Birbal went to the palace with that bull and stood in front of Akbar.
"Why have you come here with this bull with you, Birbal?" Akbar asked.
"This is my brother, the king is safe." Birbal said, "We both have grown up drinking the same mother's milk….Drinking cow's mother's milk. That's why this bull is like my brother. It also gives valuable advice. Give it to Husif, his wish of getting a mentor like me will be fulfilled."
Hearing this answer of Birbal, Akbar realized his mistake. Then he felt that as there is no other like him, Birbal is also the same.

Birbal was an honest and religious person. He used to worship God every day without doing any naga. This gave him moral and mental strength. He often said that "Whatever God does, he does it for the good of man."

A courtier did not like such things of Birbal. One day the same courtier addressed Birbal in the court and said, "Look what God has done to me - last evening when I was cutting fodder for the animals, suddenly my little finger was cut off. Will you still say the same thing? That God has done this good for me?"
After being silent for some time Birbal said, "I still believe in this because whatever God does, he does it for the good of man."
Hearing this, the courtier got angry that my finger was cut off and Birbal sees good in it too. My pain is like nothing. Some other courtiers also joined in his voice.
Then, intervening in the middle, Emperor Akbar said, "Birbal, we too have faith in Allah, but here we do not agree with you. In the case of this court, there is nothing to be praised for it."
Birbal smiled and said, "Okay where you are, only time will tell."
Three months had passed. The courtier, whose finger was cut off, was out hunting in the dense forest. Chasing a deer, he wandered and fell into the hands of the tribals. Those tribals believed in human sacrifice to please their deity. So they caught that courtier and took him to the temple, to offer sacrifice. But when the priest inspected his body, he found one finger missing.
"No, this man cannot be sacrificed." The priest of the temple said, "If this nine-fingered man is sacrificed, then our gods will be angry instead of being pleased, they do not like incomplete sacrifices. We may have to face the wrath of epidemics, floods or droughts. So leave it. It's okay to give."
And that courtier was freed.
The next day he came to Birbal in the court and started crying.
Then the emperor also came to the court and was surprised to see that courtier weeping in front of Birbal.
"What happened to you, why are you crying?" Akbar questioned.
In response, that courtier narrated his ordeal in detail. He said, "Now I am convinced that whatever God does, he does it for the good of man. Had my finger not been cut off, the tribals would surely have sacrificed me. That's why I am crying, but this Tears are of happiness. I am happy because I am alive. It was my mistake to look at Birbal's faith in God with suspicion."
Akbar smiled softly and looked at the courtiers, who stood silently with their heads bowed. Akbar was feeling proud that a wise man like Birbal was one of his courtiers.

Emperor Akbar used to ask Birbal difficult questions sometimes out of need, sometimes for entertainment.
One day the king asked- "From where did you get your sharp intellect?"
Birbal- "Jahanpanah, I got it from fools!"
The simpler the question, the more confusing and perplexing the answer is! A fool does not have any intellect, if he had intelligence, then why would he be called a fool? And how can they give to others what they do not have? Therefore, Akbar did not live.
Emperor Akbar asked- "From the fools?"
